The network of Alternative Certification programs (formerly called First Class), partnered with Chicago Public Schools, are for teachers who want to enter the classroom via one of our seven different program partnership routes. This quality network of programs enables professionals from all fields to earn their Illinois State Teaching Certificate while teaching in Chicago Public Schools – and immediately impacting our students’ academic achievement in a substantial and meaningful way.

These Alternative Certification partner programs accomplish two goals. It serves as a fresh start for professionals who are searching for a more rewarding career. It also ensures that all CPS students have the opportunity to learn, grow and unlock their full potential.

Alternative Certification participants teach during the school day and take classes, on average, two evenings per week. The coursework, taken at a university partner designated by each program, culminates in full-status certification.

Alternative Certification will give you the chance to make incredible accomplishments happen for Chicago’s children.

You cannot apply to the CPS Alternative Certification Programs. Please contact each program directly for their application information.
