Program FAQs
The CPS Teaching Residency is a six-week program. The CPS Teaching Internship is an 10-day program. Teaching Residents are in the classroom Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to noon (this may vary depending on the school hours) and on cultural field trips in the afternoons. Every Friday is a professional development summit in which Residents will not be in the classroom. Teaching Interns are in various workshops, interviews, school visits and events that begin around 8:00 am and end around 5:00 pm everyday. There will be occasional weekend social and cultural activities. There will be no class on Monday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. The CPS Teaching Residency and Internship are activity-rich and highly structured programs intended to provide real-life, hands-on teaching and enrichment. Participation is crucial to professional development. The CPS endorsement awarded at the end of the program is dependant on attendance and participation. Teaching Residents: While mandatory daily attendance is required, we do realize individuals may have made previous engagements prior to accepting the position. If a Teaching Resident or Intern has a previous commitment that requires him or her to miss a day or consecutive days from the program, he or she must obtain written approval by CPS Teaching and Residency Coordinator, Anne Crylen prior to the start of the program. Teaching Interns: As the Internship is only 10 days, it is imperative that Teaching Interns attend EVERY activity. If a Teaching Resident or Intern becomes ill and requires a day off, he or she should contact his or her assigned resident advisor, mentor teacher, school and Teaching Residency and Internship Coordinator, Anne Crylen the day of the illness. If a Resident or Intern requires medical attention during their stay in Chicago, individuals are advised to follow the instructions provided by their medical services provider. Teaching Residents in the six-week program are paid a living stipend. They are responsible for all state and local taxes. The two-week program is a non-compensated internship. As CPS employees, Teaching Residents and Interns should always strive to make a positive impression on colleagues, administrators, students and parents. In general, Teaching Residents and Interns should choose attire that presents them as professionals. CPS Management expects Teaching Residents and Interns to dress in business casual attire for all classroom, cultural and social activities. For all events featuring city officials and Board of Education members, Teaching Residents and Interns are expected to dress in business professional attire. Teaching Residents and Interns are strongly discouraged to take on extra employment during their participation in the program. The Residency and Internship are activity-intense and may require additional work or planning after hours. Additional employment often causes a significant conflict with attendance. Individuals interested in summer school coursework are responsible for making their own school arrangements with the approval of the TRIP Program Coordinator, Anne Crylen. No. The CPS Teaching Residency and Internship Programs work with challenged schools in collaboration with other CPS staffing initiatives. CPS TRIP Staff will assign all Teaching Residents to a CPS school. We will make every effort to assign Residents to schools consistent with their major, certification and/or endorsement. However, we cannot guarantee this placement. Residents can expect to be placed into schools on the South Side or West Side, as those are where the schools with the greatest teacher needs are located. CPS TRIP Staff will work with Teaching Interns in placement at challenged schools and those with high needs vacancies. Similar to a cooperating teacher, the guiding teacher is the teacher of record for the class to which Teaching Residents and Interns are assigned. This person is a certified CPS teacher with at least five years of teaching experience and three years experience with CPS. Teaching Residents work hand-in-hand with guiding teachers to execute daily lesson plans. Guiding teachers observe and evaluate Residents' performance. The supervising teacher is a National Board Certified CPS teacher who will monitor Teaching Residents' progress and engagement. Supervising teachers travel to participating schools to observe Teaching Residents at work. They monitor the relationship between Resident and guiding teacher and provide Residents with professional development feedback and overall support. Supervising teachers also host reflective sessions with Residents to share best practices and identify opportunities for additional support and resources. Supervising teachers are also responsible for evaluating Residents' performance. Supervising Teachers may also assist in the professional development seminars and workshop for Teaching Interns. Teaching Residents will be in the classroom from approximately 8:00 am to noon, Monday through Friday, assisting guiding teachers in executing lesson plans.* Residents are responsible for being committed to CPS students and their learning; actively engaged in the student learning process; and respectful of CPS students, teachers, principals, staff and other Residents and Interns. Residents are evaluated twice during the summer by their guiding teachers and are observed regularly by supervising teachers. Teaching Interns are expected to fully participate in all professional development workshops and hiring assistance during the program. Interns are responsible for being committed to CPS as a district and respectful of CPS students, teachers, principals, staff and other Residents and Interns. Participation in this program is an endorsement from the office of Human Resources and will be continually evaluated. *The exact times may vary depending on the school hours. Throughout the program, Residents and Interns will participate in a series of activities designed to enrich them educationally, culturally and socially. In the afternoons Residents and Interns take part in (a) professional development seminars that offer practical advice on classroom management and best practices for teachers in urban environments, (b) cultural activities including neighborhood bus tours and trips to area museums, historical sites, and cultural centers, and (c) social activities that include special meetings with members of the Chicago Board of Education and visits to local attractions, such as professional baseball games and cruises along Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. No. You are not required to work for the CPS once you complete the Teaching Residency. However, we hope that after you experience CPS for the summer, you will want to teach in Chicago. Both Residents and Interns will meet with high-ranking CPS administrators and members of the Board of Education, who will discuss important CPS goals and initiatives. Teaching Residents will be introduced to staff from CPS Office of Human Resources, who will provide guidance in the employment search process. No. Upon the successful completion of the program, Teaching Residents are offered endorsement from the CPS Office of Human Resources for employment in the district. Note: Employment endorsements are not employment contracts. Endorsements are contingent upon graduation and certification. Residents who receive endorsements will work directly with the CPS Residency recruiting liaison to seek full-time CPS employment. |
