Teaching Residents and Interns worked in 18 schools, and 5 neighborhoods including Belmont-Cragin, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, West Loop, and Englewood in collaboration with Mayor Daley's Keep Kids Learning Summer initiative. Teaching Residents and Interns worked with their Nationally Board Certified Supervising Teachers weekly in the classroom and during the professional development seminars focusing on a variety of topics including classroom management and teaching in the urban classroom. Teaching Residents and Interns had the opportunity to dialogue with acclaimed authors about their experiences in the classroom. Esme Raji Codell Author Ms. Codell's bestselling debut Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year tells her personal story of surviving the first year. She has also written the children's novels, Sahara Special, Dairy of a Fairy Godmother and Sing a Song of Tuna Fish. She runs the popular children's literature web site www.PlanetEsme.com. Dr. Greg Michie Assistant Professor of Secondary Education National-Louis University Dr. Michie author of Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, taught for nine years in Chicago Public Schools. He continues to work with young people at Seward Academy, a public school located in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, and helps facilitate a weekly reflection group for dropouts and gang members. Jonathan Kozol Author From his earliest experience in 1967 as a young teacher in inner-city Boston to his 1993 examination of the lives of black and Hispanic school children in the unsettled South Bronx, award-winning author and educator Jonathan Kozol has become a master at delving into the education and urban issues that plaque America. His newest book, The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America, was released in September 2005, and quickly became a national bestseller. Dr. Harry K. Wong Author Wong leaves his audiences with practical, useful techniques for how to succeed in the classroom. He has given some 3,000 presentations to nearly a half million people in every American state and Canadian province and in South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. His expertise is in classroom management and student motivation. Although Dr. Wong regards himself as "a plain old classroom teacher," record shows that he has been an excellent teacher who has his shared his success with thousands of teachers internationally. Gary Rubinstein Teacher, Author After graduating from Tufts University in 1991, Gary Rubinstein trained as a teacher with the Teach for America (TFA) program, which recruits recent graduates to teach in rural and inner-city schools throughout the country. During his five years with the program, he taught both middle school and high school students and wrote a monthly TFA newsletter column called "I Didn't Do Nuthin'." During his fourth year, he was named Teacher of the Year at the high school where he taught. Rubinstein currently works at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. Anita Kishel Author, Presenter Ruby Payne's Framework for Understanding Urban Poverty Ms. Kishel, of Muncie, Indiana has been a professional educator for over 25 years. She was awarded an Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowship in 1996, received the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship in 1998, and is a 1999 graduate of the National Staff Development Academy. She currently serves as a TopHat Mentor in a collaborative program between the Indiana Department of Education and Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) to support the implementation of research-based, effective practices in low performing schools. Dr. Allen Mendler Author Dr. Allen Mendler is an educator, school psychologist and parent of three children. He has worked extensively with children of all ages in regular education and special education settings. Dr. Mendler has consulted to many schools, day and residential centers, including extensive work with youth in juvenile detention. Dr. Mendler's emphasis is on developing effective frameworks and strategies for educators, youth professionals and parents to help difficult youth succeed. As one of the internationally acclaimed authors of the Discipline with Dignity books, Dr. Mendler has given many workshops and seminars to professionals and parents, and is highly acclaimed as a motivational speaker and trainer for numerous educational organizations.
In 2006, Teaching Residents and Interns also toured Chicago neighborhoods, experienced architectural boat tours along the Chicago River and attended a professional baseball game. Teaching Residents also met CPS Chief Educational Officer Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins and CEO Arne Duncan. Teaching Residents and Interns visited the following major cultural institutes and resources throughout the summer:
