Welcome to the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Teaching Residency and Internship Programs!

The Chicago Public Schools Teaching Residency and Internship Programs are designed to provide talented education majors the experience of living and teaching in the city of Chicago with hopes they return to the district as new hires upon graduation and certification.

The CPS Teaching Residency and Internship Programs place pre-service teaching candidates into CPS classrooms under the guidance of CPS veteran teachers and Nationally Board Certified supervising teachers. Field trips to Chicago's social and cultural events and venues as well as weekly professional development summits complement the hands-on classroom experience and support teacher preparation curriculum students are receiving at their universities.

Built from the same platform, the CPS Teaching Residency is a paid six-week teaching experience, whereas the CPS Teaching Internship is a non-compensated two-week clinical experience. Both programs offer complementary housing, a transportation subsidy and free admission to many of Chicago's museums and cultural venues.

Program Highlights include:
  • Living stipend (Residency Program only)
  • Complimentary housing
  • Transportation subsidy
  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Networking opportunities
  • Professional development
  • Free admission to Chicago's cultural and social attractions

History
The brainchild of Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago and Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the CPS Summer Fellows Program was developed in 2001 to help address teacher shortages in critical high-need areas.

The first class of Summer Fellows consisted of only 24 education majors. In 2005, the program recruited 188 Fellows from accredited colleges and universities nationwide.

In 2006, the program was tailored and tiered into a six-week residency and several two-week internships.

The program is endorsed by Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins, Chief Education Officer of the CPS, Rufus Williams, President of the Chicago Board of Education, the members of the Board, and leading education foundations and corporate sponsors.

Mission

The mission of the program is twofold:

1) To recruit as Teaching Residents and Interns academically talented education majors who have demonstrated their commitment and interest in teaching in an urban environment.

2) To hire those Teaching Residents who successfully complete the program for full-time teaching positions in CPS.

Professional Development
Teaching Residents and Interns experience customized professional development workshops focused on classroom management, which are designed to link students' educational curriculum with real-life best practices related to teaching in diverse, urban environments. Teaching Residents and Interns also receive professional development through structured reflection and day-to-day interaction with cooperating and supervising teachers who serve as mentors and role models of effective teaching habits and best practices.

Cultural and Social Enrichment
The CPS Teaching Residency and Internship Programs are activity-intense both inside and outside of the classroom. When Teaching Residents and Interns are not in class, they are exploring Chicago's cultural and social attractions through and educator's perspective. Teaching Residents and Interns visit museums and cultural centers and tour Chicago neighborhoods that expose them to the diverse, vibrant culture of Chicago. Teaching Residents and Interns leave each resource with a lesson plan in hand.
