Academy for Urban School Leadership

Mission

The mission of the Academy for Urban School Leadership is to improve student achievement in Chicago Public Schools by attracting, training and retaining Chicago's next generation of exceptional teachers and school leaders.

Attract

AUSL attracts accomplished mid-career professionals and recent college graduates with a diversity of backgrounds to bring passion and personal commitment to teaching children in Chicago's public elementary and high schools.

During their training year, program participants, called Residents, earn a $32,000 stipend, a masters degree and certification in elementary K-9 or high school 6-12. Residents commit to teaching for a minimum of 5 years in an underperforming Chicago Public School.

Train

Residents admitted through AUSL's rigorous selection process enter a 12-month teacher training residency while earning a full Master of Arts in Teaching degree from National-Louis University.

Residents train in Chicago Public School classrooms for one school year with a master teacher to develop proficiency in:

  • creating and sustaining a positive learning environment;
  • preparing, planning and implementation of curriculum;
  • differentiating instruction;
  • using progressive teaching strategies and best practices; and
  • implementing school policies and procedures.
Retain

AUSL recognizes the importance of retaining new, highly-qualified teachers and, in partnership with school principals, provides each graduate with ongoing professional development that includes:
  • on-site classroom consultation with an AUSL professional field coach;
  • quarterly workshops;
  • continuous support from AUSL master/mentor teachers; and
  • participation in alumni working groups.
