The CPS Student-Teaching Initiative continues to support and guide outstanding pre-service teachers from local and out-of-state universities. On Saturday, September 15, 2007, over one-hundred & fifty enthusiastic CPS-assigned student teachers, representing over 20 local and out-of-state universities attended the Fall 2007 Student-Teaching Professional Development Summit at IIT-Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois. The Summit was an exciting and innovative one-day conference-style event with classroom management breakout sessions, an interactive, engaging and dynamic keynote address, exciting giveaways and a free continental breakfast and lunch. The Student-Teaching Summit is strategically aligned with the Chicago Public Schools Education Plan and provides CPS student teachers with proven and effective strategies that lead to high-quality instruction and exposes them to many of the resources available to teachers employed by CPS. Each student teacher attended workshops geared toward one of four tracks: K-3rd, 4th-8th, high school general or high school math/science. The CPS Student-Teaching Program proudly collaborated with accomplished, award-winning and nationally board certified educators in the Chicago Public Schools & local university partners to facilitate the professional development workshops. Fall 2007 participants attended workshops covering classroom management, where they were provided interactive sessions that covered the elements of classroom management: fostering a positive classroom climate, establishing rules and procedures, developing pro-active teacher behaviors and determining consequences for misbehavior. The student teachers were also provided pertinent information about the National Board Certification Process, which aligns with Mayor Daley & the district's commitment to produce over one thousand National Board Certified teachers by the end of this decade. But more importantly, CPS wants to ensure that new teachers know how to define accomplished teaching at a national level. The summit keynote co-speakers were Dr. Beth Johnson & Mary Kathleen Walsh. Dr. Beth Johnson & Mary Kathleen Walsh are powerful speakers on the importance of connecting with students, with their mantra being, “You gotta reach em’ to teach them”. They're both educational consultants with Extreme Teaching for Extreme Times! LLC since 1986. Dr. Johnson has been a contributing author on numerous projects, including Barbara Bush’s text, Education and the Family and Teaching to the Heart of the Child. She has also received many awards for her outstanding work, including People Magazine’s “Above & Beyond International Service Award,” Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award and Exceptional Woman of Excellence Award. She has also been an Associate Professor at Eastern Michigan University since 1989 and has 34 years of teaching experience. Mary Kathleen is an expert in Puppet & Games Pedagogy and has been a committed educator in the catholic school system for 14 years. Mary Kathleen Walsh also serves as the Director of Clown Ministry and Mime and she is the co-author of “Teaching to the Heart of the Child”. She has received numerous awards and recognition for her many contributions to the education community, including the “Extraordinary Woman of Excellence Award” from Eastern Michigan University and the Kappa Delta Pi Exemplary Educator Award, to name a few. Dr. Johnson & Mary Kathleen Walsh saturated the student teachers with innovative, effective, proven and, most importantly, practical instructional high-quality strategies that they could immediately transfer into the classroom as student teachers and throughout their teaching careers. They utilized an innovative approach to reaching children through Puppet & Games Pedagogy & Pop Culture Pedagogy, which consisted of innovative best practice strategies, outrageous stimuli to engage all learners and igniting the J.Q. (Joy Quotient) in the learning environment. The speakers explained the importance of utilizing the resources within the “village” or the students respective community to ultimately “hook” our learners” and win the battle for their hearts and minds. This dynamic, engaging, humorous and innovative approach is proven nationally to ignite contagious joy and hope within individual classrooms, schools and communities; assist teachers in forging visions for students; and utilizing the “village” as a wealth of educational resources to increase student achievement and overall student self esteem. The student teachers also received valuable information about the CPS job search process. The event was a success, receiving a 5 point rating (excellent), on a 5 point scale! This innovative and exciting professional development event was free to all CPS-assigned Fall 2007 student teachers. The CPS student teachers that attended the Fall 2007 Summit hailed from a variety of universities & colleges within the Chicago land area and beyond.
*Save The Date* Now it's time for all Spring 2008 CPS-assigned student teachers to gear up for the upcoming Spring 2008 Summit! The Summit will be held at IIT-Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Prepare yourself for a full day of excitement!
